What is balance billing?

Balance billing is a method of billing for healthcare services that involves the health insurance company and the health plan member.

When the health plan member receives services from a health care provider that does not participate in health plan's network, the health care provider is not obligated to accept the insurer's payment as payment in full and may bill the health plan member for unpaid amount. This billing method is known as “balance billing.”
