What are surgical specialities?

Surgical specialities are sub-groups in the surgical field. Surgery is a broad field and requires extensive knowledge. In order to increase the efficiency of the educational and professional process, surgeons in training commit to a speciality and then concentrate on that area of surgery. This allows them to become experts in that particular subject area rather than having a broader but less thorough understanding or, alternatively, spending an excessively long amount of time in school. There are multiple specialities available for surgeons.

The list given by the American College of Surgeons includes:

-General surgery

-Thoracic surgery

-Colon and rectal surgery

-Obstetrics and gynecology

-Gynecologic oncology

-Neurological surgery

-Ophthalmic surgery

-Oral and maxillofacial surgery

-Orthopaedic surgery

-Otolaryngology

-Pediatric surgery

-Plastic and maxillofacial surgery

-Urology

-Vascular surgery
