What is a primary care provider?

A primary care provider (PCP) is a health care practitioner who treats the common medical problems patients.

The PCP is often the first-point of contact for patients with medical complaints or undiagnosed problems in non-emergency situations. The PCP provides, coordinates or helps a patient access a wide range of health care services.

This person is most often a physician. However, a PCP may be a physician assistant or a nurse practitioner as permitted by state law.
