What is a surgical fellow?

A surgical fellow is a certified surgeon who is undergoing further training to specialize. They are in the highest position under attending surgeons, sometimes acting as assisting attendings. A surgical fellow may act as an attending surgeon in their generalized speciality such as internal medicine. While completing their fellowship and specialization, they may not perform a surgery in their speciality unsupervised.
